Q:

How can I test or implement MailCatcher without disrupting my Exchange Installation?
A:
Exchange is often consider as en essential tools in today corporation, it's not always easy to test or implement new utilities on it. An sometime, you don't have the needed resources to build a test environment to do the evaluations.
Since Mail Catcher only need Windows 2000 SP1 SMTP service to work, you can easily build a test environment, or a live environment on a intermediate SMTP server to make sure Mail Catcher don't interfere with your Exchange server.
To accomplish it, you have many options: 1. Implement Mail Catcher on an SMTP server running on any flavor of Windows 2000 (even Pro). 2. Install an additional SMTP instance on your current exchange server.
When you have decided where you want to install Mail Catcher you need to: 1. Configure Mail Catcher Rules. 2. Configure your principal SMTP server (the one that currently receive the external mail) to redirect all misaddressed mail to the intermediate SMTP server. 3. Configure the intermediate SMTP server to redirect all incoming mail to your principal SMTP server.
This way, your email processing on the Exchange Server will proceed normally, and when it receive a misaddressed email, it will simply forward it to the intermediate SMTP server for processing instead of generating a NDR. When the intermediate SMTP server will receive those misaddressed email, it will modify the recipient address for the one you have specify and then return the mail to your principal SMTP server for delivery.

Q:

I'm testing Mail Catcher and it don't seem to get triggered?
A:
There is 2 important think to know about MailCatcher.
1. This is an SMTP Sink, therefore only email going through the SMTP protocol get processed
2. You need to make sure that the Sink priority is proper, if you have a higher priority sink like a Virus Scanner or a Junk Mail Scanner, it may get trigger before Mail Catcher and preventing him to do his job.
